The Rectorial Benefice of Llantwit Major

From the Benefice Archives

There always seems to be something going on in the Benefice and the diary is full of regular events which include everyone from babies to great grandparents!

Dilwyn Llewellyn Jones and the Archbishop of Canterbury - Dr Michael Ramsey

Visitors are always welcome in the Benefice and one of our most famous was the Archbishop of Canterbury.  On 26th May 1972 a one-day clergy conference was held in St Illtud's, Llantwit Major and Dr Michael Ramsey is seen here walking into the church with the late Rev'd John Dilwyn Llewellyn Jones.

In the year 2000 we celebrated 1500 years of Christianity in Llantwit Major with a visit from the then Archbishop of Wales,  Rowan Williams, who went on to become Archbishop of Canterbury.

After his retirement as Bishop of South West Tanganyika and on his return to Wales in 1974, Bishop John Poole Hughes wanted to assist generally in the work of the Llandaff diocese.  He  especially requested that he be able to work in the capacity of a curate where he was needed. So he came to Llantwit Major!  Shortly after this he became Bishop of Llandaff.

Interestingly, 1500 years ago the Abbot of Llantwit Major also had a bishop to help him out!
